I’ve long known Atsushi Kaneko (Bambi, Wet Moon, DeathCo ) is a big fan and friend of Maruo Suehiro so I was excited to pop along to this ‘meet the artists’ event.
The talk took place at a venue called Asagaya Loft (1 minute from Gallery Hakusen). The name being a bit of an oxymoron in English as the venue is located in the basement of a building.
The event was hosted by Maruo’s publisher Seirin Kogeisha and consisted of a Maruo interview while Atsushi drew and then the pair swapped roles. There was also a discussion with Torico, the director of Shojo Tsubaki, the film based on one of Maruo’s works (see the Youtube clip below!).
This talk was a fans delight with the two guest artists revealing tit bits about themselves ㅁnd their lives (stuff like Atsushi loves drizzling olive oil over his natto, Maruo loves fireworks, they both love the French comic festival Angeloume with a passion), before moving on to a questions written down by the audience, and finally a prize draw where audience members had the chance to win gifts provided by Seirinkogeisha and original artwork from Atsushi and Maruo ! The more items you bought from the specially designed menu for the event the raffle tickets you could get.
The whole event lasted about 3 hours in total and was a great intimate night, check out the photographs below and check out those excited (and extremely lucky!) prize winners below.
Thanks to Orbital Comics staff for making this exhibition happen! Also thanks to James Harvey and Kish Kash for helping me hang the pieces. I am thinking of having a sake and snacks closing party for anyone who want to chat about the exhibition or just say hello on August 13th 1-2pm.
It's really cool that we got staff pick of the week at Orbital Comics!
Thank you to the staff at Orbital for there support!
